The Council of the Anglo-Hellenic League has decided to hold the next Runciman Award in 2021, to coincide with the celebrations for the bicentenary of the start of the Greek War of Independence.

There will be no award in 2020.

The Runciman Award has been operating for over 30 years. We are committed to its future and think the time is right to have a brief pause, to take stock of what the prize has achieved and to agree new ambitions for the years ahead, taking account of the wider purposes of the Anglo-Hellenic League.

Our sponsorship arrangement has come to an amicable end. We are grateful to Elias Paraskevas Attorneys 1933 for their three-year support and commitment to the Runciman Award. We are now seeking a new sponsorship deal.

Our plan is to consult over the coming months with our members and supporters. We are open also to the ideas of authors and publishers. We shall make an announcement in the first half of 2020 about the relaunch of the Runciman Award.

We wish to give early warning to our authors and publishers in particular to save them from making the preparations they would normally be making now, to submit books for the award next summer. While much remains to be decided, it is our expectation that books published in both 2019 and 2020 will be eligible for the prize in 2021.
